Charity Focus
The Phoenix International Charity is supporting Cancer Research UK & Children’s Hospices UK in 2008 & 2009.
Cancer Research UK
Cancer Research UK is an independent organisation that carries out world-class research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatments of different cancers. Their findings are used to improve the lives of all cancer patients and to help people understand the disease and the different choices they can make. Cancer Research UK also collaborates with other organisations to form the strongest possible force in the fight against cancer.
The organisation has four purpose statements:
- Carry out world-class research to improve understanding of cancer and find out how to prevent, diagnose and treat different kinds of cancer
- Ensure that findings are used to improve the lives of all cancer patients
- Help people to understand cancer, the progress Cancer Research UK is making and the choices each person can make
- Work in partnership with others to achieve the greatest impact in the global fight against cancer
Phoenix Trading has been involved with Cancer Research UK for many years and we are extremely proud to announce that we’ve raised more than £450,000 in corporate donations over that time, a figure we’re hoping to increase to £500,000 by the end of 2008.

Children’s Hospices UK
Children’s Hospices UK gives a collective voice and provides donations to the 41 individual children’s hospices across the country that depend almost entirely on public support in order to continue offering their services for free.
The following is an excerpt from the Children’s Hospices UK website and explains the services the hospices offer in greater detail:
It’s every parent’s worst nightmare to be told their child will die before them. But for an estimated 20,000 families across the UK, this is a reality. Some of these children will die when they’re very young; others will deteriorate slowly over a number of years. In most cases, full-time care falls to the parents – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Not surprisingly, the whole family is under huge emotional, physical and financial strain.
Children’s hospices services help children and families in these situations with the emotional and physical challenges they face, helping them to make the most of life. They welcome the whole family for a break in a home-from-home environment or in the comfort of their own home. They also offer a diverse range of other services including symptom control, end-of-life care, the provision of therapists (such as play, art and music therapy) and bereavement support for all family members.
There are 41 children’s hospices across the UK. Each service is an independent charity which relies on public support to continue their work.
